Tutorial to Root HTC Dream [How to]

Your dream to root your HTC Dream is about to come true. In the next section, you will get the step by step guide to rooting your phone so that you get to make the most out of those apps that you cannot ordinarily just access.

However, there are things you must know

  • Rooting your HTC Dream will void its warranty.
  • It is possible that data on the phone may be lost during the rooting process, so it is best to back it all up so you are not caught unawares. You may sync your contacts and use Astro file manager to back up the other data.

Then, you will downgrade your firmware as below

i. Download the RC 29 (for US) or RC 7(for Europe) DREAIMG.nbh file.
ii. Format your SD card to FAT 32. This you can do on either Android platform, windows or Linux depending on which is most convenient for you.
iii. Copy the DREAIMG.nbh file to the SD card being careful that you do not place it inside a folder and not to rename it differently.
iv. Power OFF your phone and reboot it by holding the camera button and power on button so it boots on boot loader mode. Follow the screen instructions that will follow to the end.
v.Reboot the device by pressing the trackball then call button, menu button and power button simultaneously.

Next, root the HTC Dream

You have 2 options

Option 1

i. Reconfigure APN settings to access GPRS or use Wi-Fi to set up your Google account and access Android Market Place.
ii.  Search for telnet app and download and install it on your phone.
iii.Open this installed app and type command localhost in the text box and 23 in the smaller text box on the right and tap enter.

Option 2

i. After downgrading, you will copy the desired recovery image on to the root of SD.
ii.Enable the Wi-Fi connect and connect to your local network and tupe <enter>telnetd<enter> on the displayed screen.
iii.In the next command line, type cmd<enter>.Tap connection to know local IP address.
iv. On your PC screen, type telnet[your local ip] so that your device connects to PC. You should see ## to show successful connection.
v.Proceed to type mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

dd if=/system/bin/sh of=/system/bin/su
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su

vi.Type su in console to complete rooting. Again you will see ##.
vii.You may encounter permission denied prompt, upon which you should type these commands

mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
dd if=/system/bin/sh of=/system/bin/su
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su

Whichever will sound simpler to you, either of these two options should root your HTC Dream phone.
