Motorola Droid 2’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update 4.5.601.A955 {how to}

Finally Verizon has rolled out the most awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Motorola Droid 2 users. This new update gets 4.5.601.A955.Verizon.en.US for the Droid 2 Devices. This update has several improvements for the droid 2 device, as well as upgrading to the Android 2.3 Gingerbread Operating System.

Improvements: -

  • There is an addition of a new Download Manager App to manage all downloads from web browsing, email attachments and other apps.
  • You can now see the running applications and the storage or memory being used by each in the new “Running” tab.
  • Enter numbers and symbols with keyboard shortcut combos now, no need to change the keyboard mode again and again.
  • You can now select a word by pressing hold button and again pressing word copies the selected characters.
  • The addition of new user interface and color scheme gives you the new widgets, icons, and screen with different colors.
  • Customize docks now replace the static iPhone, App launcher and Contacts icon.
  • Create custom app groups with the new app menu, in addition of 3 default groups: All apps, recent and Downloaded.
  • Addition of device and SD card encryption. VPN enhancements integrate IPSec VPN clients into device security settings.
  • You can now see your home time zone and calendar while travelling.
  • Dismiss individual reminders.
  •  Easy conference dialing by easily entering the code from your calendar.

Other details: -

  • The upgrade process will take 20 to 45 minutes to download the software, depends on your network condition.
  • After downloading the software, the next step is to install it in the device. Installation will take up to 5-10 minutes. During the process you will be unable to receive calls.

Steps to update manually search for an upgrade on your Motorola droid 2.

  • Go to the home screen >Menu key > Settings > about phone > system updates >Download.
  • After download has completed, click Install now. You device will power off and on and display a progress bar and an installing icon. After the installation process your device will power off and on again.
  • You will get a confirmation notification that you have successfully installed and then press OK.

If you have already received a Notice on your device to upgrade the software, follow the instruction.

  • Click download to begin.

    Are we stuck with the new colors? Not crazy about the blue.

    List of problems since upgrade: Solitaire locks up and requires battery removal to reboot, “Connected to multimedia station” notification remains on even after removing from dock, Bluetooth icon does not change state when connected/disconnected, don’t seem to be getting email notifications. That’s it so far (upgraded on 9/2/2011). As a software developer I would be reprimanded for releasing software this buggy. Hope a patch is available soon or I may end up performing a factory reset.
