SmartScreen Off Turn Off Display via Proximity Sensor

Previously released android apps like SpeakerProximity and Prox have already make the best use out of proximity sensor. And now a one more app has added up to the lineup which is using proximity sensor. XDA developer member Ddeleted has developed a simple, yet useful  and handy app that allows you to control your device’s display using its proximity sensor.

For example if the sensor is covered or turn the device face down , the app will automatically turn off the screen to save battery life of your device, and once the your  uncovered the device or turn the device held up, the screen will turn on. Based on the same concept as in mobiles while on call screen will turn off but not actually locked, just to avoid battery draining.

There can be more handy uses of this app, for example , while watching a YouTube video you want to hold it for a minute instead or pausing or stopping again the video, you can simply cover the proximity sensor and once done; just watch the video from where you left it.

The app  itself work as a toggle button, to activate it simply press the App icon and everytime you put the device in your pocket the screen will be off. This SmartScreen app is assuring us to the minimal loss of battery and end up saving your some precious battery life without locking your device’s display.

In the developers own words:

Smart Screen Off, it’s a simple and light app which uses the Proximity Sensor built in your Android smartphone to turn the screen off and on automatically. I decided to code this app when I bought my Galaxy Nexus: this device doesn’t have any physical button on the front screen. Being a quite huge phone, it’s quite difficult to press the “turn off” button every time I wanted to turn it off and on. So I needed a way to turn the screen off every time I put it into the pockets and off when removed.

There is no need to say that your device is going to need a proximity sensor for this to work . The app is available at Android Market or the original xda developer thread.
